Youth for the Coast applications are open for our 5-day residential workshop for fishing community youth and early to mid-career practitioners from various research and academic backgrounds interested in working and understanding oceans, coasts in India and its ocean people.

What is Youth for the Coast?

Youth for the Coast is a workshop for those interested in protecting the interests of coasts and Ocean People. We aim to bring young people from various intersections together to learn and extend solidarity to coastal and fisher movements in India. The programme is facilitated by a consortium of organizations that have worked with the ocean people’s movements in South Asia for many decades and actively collaborate with the National Fishworker Forum.

In 2021, Our first Youth for the Coast programme was held in Goa, where 22 youths participated. After that, a second regional workshop was held in Tamil Nadu – Puducherry, followed by another national workshop in West Bengal – Kolkata. 2022 saw two Youth for the Coast programmes, a national workshop in Kerala and, the most recent, a regional workshop conducted in Maharashtra. We also conduct an Advanced Youth for the Coast and offer fellowships for former participants.

Our workshops help participants:

  1. Create within themselves a fundamental understanding of ocean and coasts as an ecological system that supports the livelihoods of fishworkers and ocean people.
  2.  Develop an understanding of how the dynamics between the ocean and coasts’ ecology, socio-economic and socio-political aspects are linked.
  3.  Understand the basic history of fisheries development in India and the narratives of struggle from people’s movements to contextualize discussions on present challenges focusing on Karnataka.
  4.  Be given an overview of how the ocean and coasts’ law, policy, and governance are structured and changing under the Blue Economy.
  5.  Collate and expand on the coastal issues specific to Karnataka and understand the history and working of coastal movements in Karnataka

Programme

Cohort VI of Youth for the Coast is a 5-day regional residential workshop for selected participants from Karnataka or who intend to work within Karnataka. Our program will equip participants with information and resources confronting the complex land, water and forest socio-ecology.

During this course, participants will engage in peer-to-peer learning, participate in field visits, engage with community leaders, academics and activists working diligently on coastal issues, and be given space to create their chosen project/intervention they would like to design and implement in the future. The participants will be introduced to movements/organizations and leaders working with coastal communities and understand the policy shifts happening at the local, regional and national levels.
